Scuba Diving Can Help You Qualify for the British Stunt Register

If you’re physically active, already into outdoor adventure, or just love a challenge, then you might be interested to know that scuba diving isn’t just a hobby — it can also count as a recognised professional discipline with the British Stunt Register (BSR).

That’s right — if you’re considering a future in film, TV, or live stunt work, scuba diving can be one of the six key skills you need to qualify as a Probationary Stunt Performer (PSP) under the BSR’s entry requirements.

What Is the British Stunt Register?

The British Stunt Register is the professional body that sets the benchmark for stunt performers in the UK screen industry. To apply, you need to demonstrate competence in six physical disciplines across at least four different groups (A to E) — covering a wide range of physical abilities.

Group E (Water) is one of those groups — and it only includes two options:

  • 🏊 Swimming

  • 🐠 Sub-Aqua (Scuba Diving)

So, if you’re not a competitive swimmer — or you simply want to bring something unique to your skillset — Sub-Aqua might be the better path.

Scuba Diving as Your Group E Skill

To use scuba diving (Sub-Aqua) as your Group E Water discipline, the BSR Application Requirements specify:

✅ Hold a Divemaster Qualification

You must be certified to Divemaster level with a recognised training agency (e.g. SSI, PADI).

✅ Submit a Complete Dive Logbook

This must show your full dive history — including site names, depths, conditions, and buddy information.

✅ Complete 18 Cold-Water Dives

You must log at least 18 dives in water temperatures of 12°C or below. These must be clearly recorded.

✅ Provide Digital Copies of All Certifications

This includes your entry-level training through to your Divemaster certification card(s).

Not Training as a Stunt Performer (Yet)? That’s OK.

Even if you’re not currently planning to become a stuntperson, these qualifications are still valuable. They can:

  • Unlock exciting new career pathways

  • Prepare you for on-screen or live performance work

  • Build confidence, control, and awareness in high-pressure environments

  • Connect you with a professional community of divers, performers, and instructors

And if you are considering a future in stunts — this gives you a head start in ticking off one of your six required disciplines.
