What is a Snorkel?
A snorkel is a simple but essential piece of equipment for exploring the underwater world while floating at the surface. By allowing you to breathe with your face submerged, it gives you the freedom to observe marine life, coral reefs, and underwater landscapes without the need to hold your breath or dive deep. At Dive Rutland, we stock snorkels designed for comfort, reliability, and ease of use—whether you’re snorkelling on holiday or as part of your scuba diving prep.
How Does a Snorkel Work?
A snorkel consists of a breathing tube, usually made from durable plastic or silicone, attached to your mask. The tube extends above the water’s surface, letting you breathe normally while your face stays underwater. Most snorkels feature a comfortable mouthpiece for easy inhaling and exhaling, ensuring a continuous supply of air during your snorkelling adventure.
Types of Snorkels Available
Classic Snorkels – Simple, J-shaped snorkels with a mouthpiece, ideal for beginners or casual snorkelers. They’re lightweight, reliable, and easy to use.
Dry Snorkels – These snorkels feature a float valve or splash guard to prevent water from entering when submerged. Perfect for staying dry while enjoying waves or rougher waters.
Semi-Dry Snorkels – A splash guard at the top reduces water entry, offering more comfort than a basic snorkel without the full dry-top mechanism.
Purge Snorkels – Equipped with a purge valve at the mouthpiece, these snorkels let you quickly clear any water without lifting the snorkel from your mouth.
Full-Face Snorkel Masks – Combining mask and snorkel into a single piece, these offer a panoramic view and allow breathing through both nose and mouth. Many models also incorporate dry-top technology to minimise water entry.
When choosing a snorkel, consider the water conditions, your comfort, and any extra features like purge valves or dry tops. The right snorkel enhances your breathing, comfort, and underwater experience, so you can focus on exploring rather than worrying about water in your tube.
