Bolt snaps, double enders, D-rings, split rings, tri-gliders and hose retaining clips: the small hardware that keeps a torch, stage, gauge or camera exactly where you left it. What clips, snaps and D-rings are for

Bolt snaps and clips are the attachment points of a dive rig. They give a secure, repeatable home for the kit you need to hand - dive lights, cameras, gauges, spools and stage cylinders - so it stays streamlined against your body instead of dangling where it can snag or get damaged. Most bolt snaps use a spring-loaded gate that can be worked one-handed, which matters when you are wearing thick gloves in cold UK water.

Single ended, double ended and D-rings

A single ended bolt snap has one spring gate and a solid eye at the other end, so it is fixed to the item you want to clip off using a split ring, line or webbing. A double ender has a gate at each end and joins two points together, which is why it turns up on stages and on anything that needs to come off again. D-rings come fixed, bent, low profile, sliding and welded onto belt stops; which pattern you need depends on the harness or wing you are fitting them to.

Materials vary - check the product page

Not everything in this collection is stainless steel. The range includes stainless steel snaps, rings and buckles, marine bronze bolt snaps and snap hooks, and clips built on nylon webbing. Those materials do not behave the same way in salt water, so read the material on the individual product page and follow the manufacturer specification rather than assuming.

Looking after them

Rinse hardware in fresh water after every dive, particularly after salt water, and work the gate through its full travel while it is still wet. A snap that has gone stiff or gritty is telling you something. Anything that will not open cleanly with one gloved hand is worth replacing rather than persevering with.

Rigging is personal

There is no single correct way to rig a set of clips, and what works on a single-cylinder recreational setup is not what works on a twinset or in sidemount. It depends on what you are clipping off and what you are wearing on your hands. A larger gate is easier to operate in thick wet gloves or drygloves; a smaller snap sits tighter against the body. There is no single right answer, which is why we keep them in the shop to handle. Trying one with your own gloves on tells you more than a size chart will.

Hose retaining clips hold low and high pressure hoses together so they route tidily instead of flapping. Several patterns are in this collection and they are sized for the hoses they clamp, so check the manufacturer specification for the hose diameters a clip is made for. If you are not sure, bring the regulator set into the shop and we will match it up.
