Fine-tuning buoyancy and trim

Our Weights collection at Dive Rutland includes the essential components needed to fine-tune your buoyancy and trim. From block and coated weights to weight belts, pouches and clips, each item is selected for reliability, durability and ease of use. Proper weighting is key to comfort, control and safety underwater, and our range supports both recreational and technical divers looking to achieve a balanced, efficient setup.

How much lead you carry is individual to you, so we do not publish a rule of thumb. It changes with your exposure suit, your cylinder, the water you are diving in and your own build. Do a proper weight check in the water, ideally with an instructor, and check the manufacturer specification for what any belt or pocket is designed to hold.

Belts, pouches and weight systems

A weight belt keeps ballast off your wing or BCD and stays simple to remove, which is why most training starts there. Pouch and shot belts spread the load and sit more comfortably on the hips. Integrated systems and quick-release weight pockets move ballast onto the harness or cam bands instead. We stock belts, buckles, retainers, webbing and empty pouches so you can build or repair a setup rather than replace it.

Trim weights, V-weights and tail weights

Not all ballast belongs at your waist. Trim pockets mount higher on a harness or cam band, V-weights sit between the cylinders of a twinset, and tail weights sit at the base of a backplate. Used well they change your position in the water rather than simply your total weight. Fitment is system-specific, so check the manufacturer specification for your plate, harness or wing before ordering.

Hard lead, coated blocks and shot

We stock hard lead blocks in a range of sizes, alongside loose lead shot by the kilo and net shot pouches. Blocks give you fixed increments on a belt; shot conforms to your body and lets you adjust in smaller steps. Coated lead is easier on boat decks and on the rest of your kit.

There is no general figure we can give you, because correct weighting is individual. It depends on your exposure suit, the material and size of your cylinder, whether you are diving fresh or salt water, and your own body composition. The right way to find it is a proper weight check in the water, ideally with an instructor. Read our Proper Weighting guide, or talk to the team and we will help you work it out.
