Why replace a fin strap

Rubber fin straps perish. They stiffen with age and UV, then split at the buckle slot, usually at the least convenient moment. Replacing a strap is a great deal less trouble than replacing a pair of fins, and a strap that has gone hard and shiny is worth changing before it lets go on a dive rather than after.

Spring straps and bungee straps

A spring or bungee strap replaces the adjustable rubber strap with a fixed-length elastic one. There is no buckle to fiddle with in the water and less to snag: you push your foot in and it holds. The trade-off is that the length is fixed, so you need the right one for your fin and for what you wear on your feet. Manufacturers publish sizing for their own models, so check the manufacturer specification.

Fittings are not universal

Strap and buckle fittings vary between manufacturers and often between models from the same manufacturer. Some of what is here is model specific - the XDEEP springs, for instance, are made for the EX-1 fin - and some is a more general replacement. Check the product page for the fins a part is intended for. If it is not obvious, bring the fins in and we will offer the strap up against them.

Buckles and pins

Buckles crack and pins get lost. Where a manufacturer sells those parts separately you can rebuild a strap assembly instead of replacing the whole thing. Match the buckle to the fin, not just to the strap.

No. Strap and buckle fittings differ between manufacturers and often between models from the same manufacturer. Some of what is here is model specific. Check the product page for the fins a strap is made for, and if it is not clear, bring your fins into the shop and we will try them against it.

They are different rather than automatically better. A spring or bungee strap is a fixed length, so there is no buckle to adjust in the water and less to snag, and getting in and out is quick. A rubber strap is adjustable, which helps if the same fins go over different boots. Plenty of divers are perfectly happy on rubber.

Length depends on the fin foot pocket and on what you wear on your feet, since a drysuit boot takes up considerably more room than a thin bootie. Manufacturers publish sizing for their own models, so check the manufacturer specification, or come in with your fins and your boots and we will size them properly.
