SSI Boat Diver Speciality

Most of the world's best scuba diving is accessible only by boat, with their own rules and etiquette.  The SSI Boat Diver Speciality course will expand your knowledge and enjoyment of diving from small inflatables to large liveaboards

Advantages of Boat Diving

  • No More Long Surface Walks;
  • No More Long Surface Swim;
  • Get to more untouched Dive Sites or just those a little further offshore

Whether you have never made a boat dive or you have logged dozens, the SSI Boat Diver Speciality course can benefit almost every diver because different boats in different parts of the world do things differently.  The SSI Boat Diver Speciality course familiarises you with the various ways you stow your equipment, enter and exit the water, use surface lines and more, depending upon the type of boat and location.

What Do I need to start the PADI Boat Speciality?

  • SSI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organisation)
  • Minimum age: 10 years old

What Will I do During the SSI Boat Diver Speciality?

During your SSI Boat Diver Specialty course, you will:-

  • Gain the appropriate knowledge and terminology related to boat diving
  • Learn how to correctly stow your equipment
  • Learn about Boat safety, including how to locate safety equipment - you never know when you might need that extra toilet roll!
  • Learn what you can expect in a boat safety briefing from the boat skipper
  • Cover the relevant Boat diving procedures and general boat etiquette
  • Cover Entry and exits appropriate to the boat you are diving on
  • Have access to a Dive Rutland Instructor throughout the day to guide you in all things Boat diving
  • Over one day complete two boat dives -  planning the dive and diving the plan (the cost of the boat trip is NOT included)

Materials for the SSI Boat Diver Speciality Course

As part of the course you will be provided with the SSI Boat Diver Elearning materials or you to complete the relevant Knowledge Reviews, which you will review with your Instructor PRIOR to getting on the boat as part of your Boat Diver Speciality

For the Boat Diver Speciality completed in the UK as part of a Dive Rutland Trip,  you can use your own dive equipment but if you do not have or own, then you will be supplied with the items (for example Drysuit, if holder of Dry Suit Diver Speciality) to fill any gaps in equipment you do not yet own!.

During the Boat Speciality you will need to deploy an SMB have you ever done - we have a combined Boat Speciality and SMB Workshop Bundle so you can gain the Boat speciality and the skills of SMB prior to the trip

Whats my Next Adventure after the SSI Boat Diver Speciality?

Come diving with us, we have regulator trips and events and this counts as an additional speciality towards the SSI Master Scuba Diver

SSI Boat Diving Bundle

Coming diving with us off a boat or coming on holiday with us and and planning to boat dive for the first time then being well prepared means you will have the best experience.

It is also generally a requirement by a boat charter that everyone carries an SMB and reel / spool AND is able to deploy correctly.

We have 'built' this package to help you get the best out of diving with us and in a new environment.

The two skills and knowledge in this bundle are:

1) Boat Speciality - Know how to dive off a boat - how to store your dive equipment and how to use the head!  Which side to be sick off (yes really there is a right side).

2) SMB - Be able to deploy an SMB and complete a safety stop whilst using.  Having the right SMB, spool or reel for the waters you will be diving in.

Before we go away on a trip you will spend one day in open water with us completing our SMB Workshop and then during your first boat trip with us complete the Boat Speciality
