What is the SSI Shark Ecology Speciality?
The SSI Shark Ecology Speciality is your chance to dive into the fascinating world of sharks—some of the most misunderstood and awe-inspiring creatures in our oceans. This course dispels myths and focuses on the vital role sharks play in marine ecosystems. You’ll learn how to identify different species, understand their behaviours, and explore the threats they face from overfishing and habitat loss. Whether you're a conservation-minded diver or just fascinated by sharks, this course will leave you inspired to dive with knowledge and respect.
What Do I Need to Start the SSI Shark Ecology Speciality?
No in-water sessions are required, making this a perfect dry speciality. All you need is:

An interest in marine life and sharks

Minimum age of 10 years
This course is suitable for both non-divers and certified divers looking to enhance their marine biology knowledge.
However, we do offer this course with a classroom and diving pool session where we will undertake some practical activities and get to experience what it is like to 'hunt like a shark' using only electroreceptors.
How Long Does the SSI Shark Ecology Speciality Take?
The course includes a mix of independent online study and optional instructor-led sessions. You can complete it in as little as half a day, depending on your pace and schedule. It's flexible, fun, and full of fin facts!
Our instructor led sessions include a pool session and are a great fun fully interactive session and are ran for children (min numbers 2 apply).
