Undersuits

The drysuit keeps you dry; the undersuit keeps you warm. It is the half of the system divers most often under-buy, and the half that decides whether a winter dive is comfortable. We stock Fourth Element, Santi and DynamicNord, from base layers through to heavyweight thermals, in men's and women's cuts. Suit and undersuit are one decision, so buy them together if you can.

Undersuits: warmth, comfort, and how to choose

A good undersuit is an essential part of a drysuit system, keeping you warm, comfortable and protected in cold water. The right one regulates temperature, manages moisture and lets you move freely, which affects both safety and enjoyment.

We stock and dive undersuits from Fourth Element, Santi and DynamicNord, chosen for proven performance in UK cold-water conditions.

    Thermal undersuits

Designed for maximum insulation in cold water. Typically layered or fleece-based, they trap warm air around the body while remaining breathable. Best for winter diving, deeper profiles and longer dive durations.

    Lightweight undersuits and base layers

Lightweight undersuits balance warmth against flexibility, giving insulation without bulk so trim and movement stay easy. Many divers use them year-round and add layers as temperatures drop.

Base layers are worn against the skin and focus on moisture management. They wick sweat away, which keeps you warmer for longer and makes repeat dives more comfortable. They are a foundation rather than a standalone layer in cold water.

    Layering systems

Layering lets you adapt insulation to water temperature, dive duration and your own tolerance to cold. A base layer plus a lightweight or thermal undersuit covers most of the UK year without buying several single-purpose suits.

When choosing, consider insulation level, breathability and moisture-wicking, freedom of movement, fit under your drysuit without restriction, and how easy it is to get on and off. The right undersuit keeps you warm without compromising buoyancy control or mobility.

    Choosing the right undersuit

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best undersuit depends on your dive environment, your exposure protection and your own comfort. UK divers in particular benefit from adaptable systems that work across changing seasons. If you are unsure, speak to us: we dive this kit ourselves and can advise from real-world use.

    Frequently asked questions

Most UK divers end up with a thermal undersuit for winter and something lighter for summer, or a layering system that covers both.

How long you are in the water, how hard you are working and your own tolerance to cold move the answer as much as the water temperature does. Two divers on the same dive can need noticeably different insulation, which is why we would rather talk it through than quote a rating.
That is the question to ask before the warmth one. A thicker undersuit only helps if the suit still closes comfortably and you can reach your valves and move freely.

If your drysuit was fitted over a thin undersuit, moving to a heavyweight thermal may not work. Bring the suit in and try the combination together rather than buying the undersuit on its own.
It is worth it. A base layer moves sweat away from your skin, and damp skin is what makes you cold on the second dive of the day rather than the first.

It also makes a thermal undersuit easier to get on and off, and adds a little warmth for very little bulk.
