SSI Fish Identification

Every dive is an opportunity to discover something new. But how much more exciting is it when you can recognise the creatures you are seeing, understand their behaviour, and know what makes each species unique?

The SSI Fish Identification Speciality helps you move beyond simply seeing fish underwater and teaches you the skills to identify, understand and appreciate the incredible diversity of aquatic life.

SSI Fish Identification Speciality Course Overview

The SSI Fish Identification program provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to identify common fish families and species, understand their characteristics, and learn how to observe aquatic life responsibly.

Whether you are exploring UK waters, tropical reefs, wrecks or your local dive site, being able to recognise the marine life around you adds a whole new dimension to your diving.

This Speciality certification also counts as one of the four Speciality certifications required for your SSI Master Scuba Diver certification.

What do I need to start the SSI Fish Identification Speciality Course?

  • You need to be 10 years old or over

  • Be qualified as an SSI Scuba Diver or above

  • An interest in marine life and the underwater world

What will I do during the SSI Fish Identification Speciality Course?

Your learning starts with the SSI digital materials, where you will discover how scientists and divers identify fish species and understand the amazing variety of life found underwater.

During the course you will learn:

🐟 How to identify different fish families and species
🐟 The key features used for fish identification
🐟 How fish are classified and grouped
🐟 How to recognise differences between similar-looking species
🐟 Fish behaviours and adaptations that help them survive
🐟 How environmental conditions influence aquatic life
🐟 How to observe marine life without disturbing it

You will explore examples from different parts of the world, including tropical reefs and temperate waters, helping you become more confident recognising the creatures you encounter on your dives.

What materials will I use during the SSI Fish Identification Speciality Course?

As part of the course you will receive access to the SSI Fish Identification digital learning materials through the SSI App.

You can complete the knowledge reviews at your own pace before attending any optional classroom session with our SSI Professionals.

What’s my next adventure?

Once you start recognising the fish and marine life around you, every dive becomes a treasure hunt.

Your next reef, wreck or lake dive will become more interesting as you begin to notice behaviours, identify species and understand the underwater world in a completely new way.

Why not combine your new knowledge with one of our diving adventures? From UK waters to tropical reefs and marine conservation trips, there is always something new to discover.

It’s not all about training… you should have the knowledge, but most importantly come diving with us and apply what you have learnt. Join our trips, meet fellow divers, make memories and continue your underwater adventures.

Outstanding experience especially for young divers!

We had an absolutely fantastic experience with dive Rutland ! Tracy and the entire team was very friendly, helpful, and professional from start to finish. They went above and beyond to support our 13 year old for their open water course and her drysuit training.

What really stood out was the patience and care shown throughout the process. The instructors took the time to explain everything clearly, made our
daughter feel confident and safe , and ensured they progressed at a comfortable pace. It was never rushed - just supportive , thorough instructions from a team who clearly loves what they do.

Highly recommend Dive Rutland to anyone - especially families or younger divers. We’re so grateful for the experience and can’t wait to come back!

#1 training centre in my eyes. The team are friendly, courteous and astute to your individual needs and capability. Of course you’d expect to come away with a certification after paying your money; however, you come away with far more than the basic knowledge and skills to pass the certification, you come away feeling capable and competent and with a group of people you want to keep in touch with as friends and dive with more. Keep it up Dive Rutland!

Drysuit Speciality - Was excellent. From the first briefing at the shop. To the pool dive. To the real thing at Stoney Cove (my first time there!). Great mix of professional efficiency with real world fun. Always felt safe. Not the best of weather, but I stayed bone dry. No hesitation in recommending Tracey and the team to anyone considering taking up diving, like me. But be warned, it’s addictive!! Special thanks to Rob
