SSI Freshwater Ecology Specialty

What is the SSI Freshwater Ecology Specialty?

The SSI Freshwater Ecology Specialty is an engaging, knowledge-based course designed to give you a deeper understanding of freshwater environments and the ecosystems that exist within them. From lakes and rivers to quarries and reservoirs, this specialty helps you interpret what you see underwater and understand how these environments function, change, and interact with human activity.

It’s ideal for anyone who wants to build environmental awareness, enhance their diving knowledge, or simply learn more about the natural world beneath the surface.

What will you learn?

During the programme, divers explore topics such as:

  • The different types of freshwater ecosystems, including lakes, rivers, wetlands, reservoirs, and groundwater systems
  • How freshwater ecosystems develop and function
  • The relationships between plants, animals, and environmental conditions
  • Biodiversity found in freshwater environments
  • Seasonal changes that influence freshwater habitats
  • Human impact on freshwater ecosystems
  • How divers can reduce their impact when exploring these environments

What do I need to start the SSI Freshwater Ecology Specialty?

No in-water sessions are required, making this a perfect dry specialty course. To get started, you only need:

  • An interest in freshwater environments and aquatic life

  • Minimum age of 10 years

This course is suitable for both non-divers and certified divers who want to expand their ecological knowledge and improve their understanding of the environments they explore.

We also offer an optional interactive instructor-led version, including classroom discussion and pool-based practical sessions. In this format, participants take part in fun, hands-on activities, including exploring sensory adaptations in aquatic environments—such as experiencing how animals may use electroreception-like concepts to navigate and hunt.

How long does the SSI Freshwater Ecology Specialty take?

This is a flexible, self-paced course combining independent online learning with optional instructor-led sessions.

  • Can be completed in as little as half a day

  • Learn at your own pace, anytime and anywhere

  • Fully flexible to fit around your schedule

Our instructor-led sessions include a pool-based practical workshop, designed to be highly interactive and enjoyable. These sessions are particularly popular with younger participants (minimum group numbers apply).

What’s included?

Your course fee includes:

  • Digital learning materials via the SSI app or website

  • Official SSI certification upon completion

  • Access to optional instructor-led sessions (where selected)

No diving is required, and there are no additional dive site or equipment costs, making this an accessible and affordable way to expand your knowledge.

Outstanding experience especially for young divers!

We had an absolutely fantastic experience with dive Rutland ! Tracy and the entire team was very friendly, helpful, and professional from start to finish. They went above and beyond to support our 13 year old for their open water course and her drysuit training.

What really stood out was the patience and care shown throughout the process. The instructors took the time to explain everything clearly, made our
daughter feel confident and safe , and ensured they progressed at a comfortable pace. It was never rushed - just supportive , thorough instructions from a team who clearly loves what they do.

Highly recommend Dive Rutland to anyone - especially families or younger divers. We’re so grateful for the experience and can’t wait to come back!

#1 training centre in my eyes. The team are friendly, courteous and astute to your individual needs and capability. Of course you’d expect to come away with a certification after paying your money; however, you come away with far more than the basic knowledge and skills to pass the certification, you come away feeling capable and competent and with a group of people you want to keep in touch with as friends and dive with more. Keep it up Dive Rutland!

Drysuit Speciality - Was excellent. From the first briefing at the shop. To the pool dive. To the real thing at Stoney Cove (my first time there!). Great mix of professional efficiency with real world fun. Always felt safe. Not the best of weather, but I stayed bone dry. No hesitation in recommending Tracey and the team to anyone considering taking up diving, like me. But be warned, it’s addictive!! Special thanks to Rob
