SSI Wreck Diver

The lure of exploring sunken vessels, airplanes, cars, tanks, rigs and more is something most divers can not resist

SSI Wreck Diving Speciality Course Overview

The SSI Wreck Diving program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to safely conduct non-penetration dives around wrecks and artificial reefs.

This Speciality certification also counts as one of the four Speciality certifications required for your SSI Master Scuba Diver certification.

What do I need to start the SSI Wreck Diving Speciality Course?

  • You need to be 10 years old or over
  • Be qualified as a Open Water Diver or above.
  • Mask / Snorkel / Dive Computer / Compass / SMB and Reel
  • Ideally you should have your own gloves and dive light / torch, but these can be supplied on request

What will I do during the SSI Wreck Diving Speciality Course?

There are many different types of wrecks, some of which are protected by laws that guard their historical and cultural significance.

  • Your training starts with a classroom session to cover off knowledge reviews and to go through how to undertake good quality investigation work on wrecks using the various sources and to work out what NOT to use in planning / then you will take away some homework to complete on a wreck of our choice (we choose any and generally something that is in the trip schedule), which you will then use as part of a dive brief on the open water day.

During Open Water session you will learn :-

  • How to plan and execute a wreck dive with your buddy
  • What safety considerations to undertake for navigating and exploring wrecks and how to avoid common hazards
  • Surveying and mapping a wreck - using wreck SCUBA diving equipment and things to think about when using / purchasing reels / lines and torches amongst others
  • How to use penetration / tethered lines and reels to guide exploration.
  • Techniques to avoid kicking up silt or disturbing the wreck and its inhabitants.
  • During dive 2 you will also deploy an SMB an important means of safely undertaking a safety stop and your surface support boat (if diving from a boat) know where you are.
  • All dives you will gain additional experience in planning, organising and making two wreck dives under the supervision of your SSI Instructor and support professionals, enabling you to plan well continued and safe wreck dives
  • Complete a wreck swim through if safe to do.

What materials will I use during the SSI Wreck Speciality Course?

As part of the course you will be provided with the SSI Elearning materials via the SSI App for you to complete the relevant Knowledge Reviews

How long does the SSI Wreck Speciality Course take?

  • 2 - 3 Hours for the classroom session to cover wreck investigation and knowledge review
  • 1 days in open water.

Any other costs?

Not included is the Entrance fees for open water site and personal travel costs

Whats my next adventure?

When you have completed 24 dives and this speciality you can undertake the Advanced Wreck diving course.

Couldnt recommend Tracy and her team enough for a first aid course. Having to renew it every 3 years used to send me to sleep. Not with these guys! professional, up to date and with lots of toys to play with, without the death by powerpoint.
