SSI Marine Mammal Ecology Speciality Course Overview

The SSI Marine Mammal Ecology program provides you with the knowledge needed to identify marine mammals, understand their biology and behaviour, and appreciate their role within marine ecosystems.

Through engaging digital learning and optional classroom discussions, you will discover how these animals have adapted to life in the ocean and learn about the conservation challenges they face around the world.

This Speciality certification also counts as one of the four Speciality certifications required for your SSI Master Scuba Diver certification.


What do I need to start the SSI Marine Mammal Ecology Speciality Course?

  • You need to be 10 years old or over

  • No previous diving certification is required

  • An interest in marine life and ocean conservation


What will I do during the SSI Marine Mammal Ecology Speciality Course?

Your learning begins with the SSI digital materials, where you will explore the biology and ecology of marine mammals found throughout the world's oceans.

During the course you will learn:

🐬 The different groups of marine mammals and how they are classified
🐬 How whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and sea lions have adapted to life underwater
🐬 Feeding, communication and social behaviours
🐬 Migration patterns and breeding strategies

What materials will I use during the SSI Marine Mammal Ecology Speciality Course?

As part of the course you will receive access to the SSI Marine Mammal Ecology digital learning materials through the SSI App.

You can complete the course entirely through eLearning or choose to join an optional classroom session with one of our SSI Professionals to discuss the topics in greater depth and share experiences from marine mammal encounters around the world.


How long does the SSI Marine Mammal Ecology Speciality Course take?

eLearning Only:
Complete the course at your own pace through the SSI App.

eLearning + Classroom Session:
Approximately 2–3 hours, including discussion, conservation topics and examples of marine mammal encounters from around the world.


Any other costs?

There are no additional diving costs for this course as it is a dry speciality.

A doctor's confirmation of fitness to dive is required if you answer YES to any medical condition on the Medical Statement.
