Dial size is usually the first decision. A larger face is easier to read at a glance in poor visibility; a smaller one stows more neatly against a wing or harness. After that it comes down to the scale you want to read and the maximum reading you need for the cylinders you dive — we quote our own fills in bar. Scales and fittings vary between models, so check the manufacturer specification before ordering.
A submersible pressure gauge runs on a high-pressure hose from your first stage and is read throughout the dive. A button gauge or cylinder pressure check gauge screws straight onto a cylinder valve and tells you what is in it on the surface, which saves rigging a regulator to every stage and stored cylinder just to look. Divers who own several cylinders tend to keep both sorts to hand.
An SPG connects to a high-pressure port on the first stage, and ports and fittings are not identical across regulators — check the manufacturer specification for yours. High-pressure hoses live in our Hoses and accessories collection. If you would rather not take the job on, our regulator servicing workshop can fit a gauge and pressure-check the result. If you want to understand how your first stage handles pressure in the first place, Understanding Intermediate Pressure in Scuba Regulators is a good read.
A gauge is only as useful as the habit of reading it. Our guide to air planning covers turning cylinder contents into a dive plan you can actually hold to. If a gauge is sticking, misting up or reading oddly, bring it to us rather than diving it — regular servicing catches this sort of thing early, and a gauge you cannot trust is worse than no gauge at all.
