SSI Scuba Skills Update
Are your dive skills feeling a bit rusty, or has it been a while since your last dive? Fear not! The SSI Scuba Skills Update is designed to swiftly reintroduce you to the underwater world with confidence and ease.
This scuba refresher course provides a valuable opportunity to revisit and refine the scuba skills acquired during your Open Water Diver program, regardless of agency you originally trained with.
You will be guided by one of our experienced SSI Professionals, you'll refresh your abilities, ensuring a seamless return to diving.
Ideal for those planning a dive holiday, the Scuba Skills Update minimises skill-related concerns, allowing you to focus on the mesmerisng marine life. For non-certified Open Water Diver students, this course offers a perfect chance to practice and enhance dive skills before venturing into open water training dives.
Using SSI Elearning, prior to your in water session with us you will review some Dive theory, you will move through at your own pace, and delve deeper into topics when you need or want to after completing the theory review.
What Will I do as part of the SSI Skills Update?
Prior to your confined water, you will create a profile in the SSI App (if you do not already have one) and we will allocate you the online course
In the water a Dive Rutland Professional will help you regain comfort and confidence in scuba diving. You'll practice a few safety-related skills and then go over anything you specifically want to review.
During the Water Skills part you will have to assemble your equipment, enter the water and:
- Practise Controlled Descents and Ascents
- Remove, replace and clear the mask
- Practise Neutral Buoyancy (Proper Diving positions)
- Use the weight system’s quick release to become positively buoyant in water too deep to stand in
- Ascend using an alternate air source and establish positive buoyancy on the surface
- Practise Emergency Ascent Skills
After this our Instructor will help you to practice and SCUBA skills you would like to practice.
How long does the SSI Scuba Skills Update take?
- Online e-learning 2 - 6 Hours
- One pool session - 2 Hours with dry session prior
What Do i need for the SSI Scuba Skills Update Session?
- Swimming Attire - A Swimming Costume / Towel
- Wetsuit or Rash Vest and shorts
- Your diving mask, snorkel, fins and computer (if you have one)
All other diving equipment - BCD / Regulators / Cylinder and Air is provided, but if you have you own SCUBA equipment and you wish to use it that's fine so long as its within service dates and CE marked

Nottingham Scuba Diving Facility
The training facility at our Nottingham location features a purpose-built pool that is 4 meters deep and 10 meters in diameter, providing an exceptional environment for scuba diving training. The pool boasts fantastic visibility and maintains a constant temperature of around 29 degrees, ensuring optimal comfort for all divers.
A 1.6-meter training platform extends over 50% of the pool's bottom surface, offering ample space for practicing various diving skills. The pool's unique design, with a bottom depth of 4 meters, allows divers to swim in a 30-meter circular path, simulating open water conditions. This facility also includes a gas filling station, a classroom, and an equipment showroom, making it a comprehensive training center for divers of all levels.
Oakham Swimming Pool
The 25m heated swimming pool at Oakham School's Leisure Centre is perfect for scuba diver training and kids' diving courses. This state-of-the-art facility provides laned sections for focused training and a comfortable, warm environment, ensuring an ideal learning experience for divers of all ages and skill levels. Whether you're refining your technique or introducing children to the wonders of diving, our pool offers the perfect setting.
Our pool session(s) are on Saturday evenings from 18:00 - 20:00, with a meet at the Dive Centre prior (this time will be confirmed when you book). The time at the Dive Centre is spent on various activities depending on which course you are undertaking but for all first session this will involve introducing you to your instructor, the dive equipment you will be using in the pool, a safety briefing and the evenings activities. During non term time then we have a pool session available on a Thursday from 19:00 - 21:00.
