PADI Wreck Speciality

The lure of exploring sunken vessels, airplanes, cars, tanks, rigs and more is something most divers can not resist

PADI Wreck Speciality Course Overview

The PADI Wreck Diver Speciality course introduces you to wreck diving and helps you develop the skills and knowledge necessary for safe and fun wreck diving.

But I have already dived on Wrecks we hear you say.... well this course is still VERY valuable as you may be unfamiliar with all of the different types of wrecks, their respective configurations, potential hazards, equipment options and operating protocols that you may come into contact with when diving

Your Adventures In Diving Wreck Adventure Dive may count towards this Speciality certification at instructor discretion and this Speciality certification also counts as one of the five Speciality certifications required for your Master Scuba Diver certification.

What do I need to start the PADI Wreck Speciality Course?

  • You need to be 15 years old or over
  • Be qualified as a PADI Adventure Diver or above (or another equivalent certification).
  • Mask / Snorkel / Dive Computer and Compass
  • Ideally you should have your own gloves and dive light / torch, but these can be supplied on request

What will I do during the PADI Wreck Speciality Course?

There are many different types of wrecks, some of which are protected by laws that guard their historical and cultural significance.

  • Your training starts with a classroom session to cover off knowledge reviews and to go through how to undertake good quality investigation work on wrecks using the various sources and to work out what NOT to use in planning / then you will take away some homework to complete on a wreck of our choice (we choose any and generally something that is in the trip schedule), which you will then use as part of a dive brief on the open water day.

During Open Water session you will learn :-

  • And discuss safety considerations for navigating and exploring wrecks and how to avoid common hazards
  • Surveying and mapping a wreck - using wreck SCUBA diving equipment and things to think about when using / purchasing reels / lines and torches amongst others
  • Using penetration lines and reels to guide exploration.
  • Techniques to avoid kicking up silt or disturbing the wreck and its inhabitants.
  • All dives you will gain additional experience in planning, organising and making at least three wreck dives under the supervision of your PADI Instructor and support professionals, enabling you to "Think like a diver"
  • On completion of all of the land based training - how to utilise slates to record data you collect about the wreck on each orientation dive (Dive 1 and 2) such as hazards, entry and exit points etc.  You will use your compass, to navigate out to your chosen wreck after planning each of your wreck dives.
  • Considerations and techniques for entering intact wrecks - using skills learn on the earlier wreck dives - providing the option for Wreck penetration as part of Wreck Dive 4.
    • Penetration training dives are limited to within the light zone and within 40 linear meters from the surface, vertical and horizontal distance included. If the wreck used for training is located in deep water (over 18 metres), the Deep Diver rating is recommended as a prerequisite for the Wreck Diver course.

What materials will I use during the PADI Wreck Speciality Course?

As part of the course you will be provided with a PADI Wreck Speciality Manual or Elearning for you to complete the relevant Knowledge Reviews, which you will review with your Instructor during your classroom session

How long does the PADI Wreck Speciality Course take?

  • 2 - 3 Hours for the classroom session to cover wreck investigation and knowledge review
  • 3 Dive Speciality - 1 day in open water
  • 4 Dive Speciality - 2 days in open water
