PADI Drift Diver Speciality

The feeling of just going with the flow is exhilarating, but needs to be done properly

Drift diving can be fun and make you feel as if you are flying through the water.  Ton enjoy your flight, you need to ensure you have planned the dive, be a really attentive dive buddy and have the skills to remain safe.

At the end of the day there is nothing to stop you from going out and doing a drift dive, but do you really know how to dive in a drift?  Do you know that currents don't flow uniformly?

As drift diving or for that matter any type of diving in a current is an extra element of risk that can put you in harms way if you do not know or understand what you are up against.  This course teaches you how to safely plan and participate in drift diving be that using an ocean or river current to fly.  If done properly drift diving can be relaxing and exhilarating at the same time

You may also count this speciality towards your Master Scuba Diver certification

What do I need to start the PADI Drift Diver Speciality?

  • PADI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organisation)
  • Minimum age: 10 years old

What will I do during the PADI Drift Diver Speciality?

The drift diver course includes a knowledge segment and two drift dives. The PADI course highlights the following material in the knowledge segment:

  • Planning, organisation, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of drift diving
  • An introduction to drift diving equipment — floats, lines, reels
  • Buoyancy-control, navigation and communication for drift diving
  • Site selection and overview of aquatic currents
  • Causes and effects
  • Techniques for staying close to a buddy or together as a group

Each of these elements are crucial and should be a part of your pre-dive planning.
The techniques for staying together as a group is an in-water skill that can be the key to a successful drift dive as you will learn that the strength and even the direction of current can change at different depths.

How long does the PADI Drift Diver Speciality Take?

One day - Two drift dives

Any Other Costs?

Costs for the Boat Dive and personal travel cost

Materials for the PADI Drift Diver Speciality Course

As part of the course you will be provided with a PADI Drift Diver Speciality Manual or Elearning for you to complete the relevant Knowledge Reviews, which you will review with your Instructor PRIOR to getting on the boat as part of your Drift Speciality

For the Drift Diver Speciality completed in the UK as part of a Dive Rutland Trip,  you can use your own dive equipment but if you do not have or own, then you will be supplied with the items (for example Drysuit, if holder of Dry Suit Diver Speciality) to fill any gaps in equipment you do not yet own!.

What is my next Adventure after the PADI Drift Diver Speciality?

Go Diving and experience the thrill but consider the Surface Marker Buoy speciality so you know how to AND can deploy an SMB just in case you get into difficulty, or separated from your buddy or even deploy with your buddy so you stay safe and everyone knows where you are.
