SSI Explorer
Life is about adventures and experiences
Here is your chance to do some cool stuff in the pool, meet new friends and have adventures in the underwater world
Course Overview
Combined with the guidance and supervision of qualified SSI Explorers Instructors, this program includes a comprehensive printed Explorers manual to help your child learn the knowledge and skills they need to safely participate in snorkelling, mermaid, freediving, and scuba in a pool or confined water environment. The manual is very engaging, with colourful cartoon drawings and authentic ocean images for this young audience.
We join Emma and Nico on exciting underwater adventures as they guide your children through the educational content in a fun and engaging way, using Spike the shark as their equipment expert and Shelly the sea turtle as the ocean environment champion.
What Do I need to Start?
- You need to be 8 years old or over
- Parents to download the SSI app and complete the required student medical and responsibility code of diving for the young explorer.
What Will I do?
The SSI Explorers package consists of four sessions with our highly qualified dive professionals. Each session consists of two elements - one dry and the other wet.
The dry session is held at the Dive Centre from 16:30 - 17:30, during which we will review the 'theory' and dry skills element that will have been pre-read prior to the session via the manual provided.
The wet session is held at Oakham School Pool from 18:00 - 20:00 where we will teach your child how to snorkel and dive and the skills learnt will be consolidated by underwater games.
During each session we will teach the basics of snorkelling and diving, just like the adults - things like buoyancy control, mask skills and regulator recovery which once learnt are then integrated with underwater games to continue to practise and apply the new skills learnt.
On completion of session one subject to meeting all the performance requirement the SSI Snorkel Explorer certification will be acheived and at the end of session four the Scuba Explorer certification
This course is designed for young divers who are looking for action packed fun in a pool, being introduced to the basics of safe diving in a play environment as not yet old enough to start on the Junior Open Water course.

Over four sessions on Saturdays generally, you will meet your SSI Dive Professional at the dive centre at 16:30 for a full briefing and equipment preparation, followed by a 2 hour pool session 18:00 - 20:00 and a debrief session.
Thats a total of 16 hours after which the Snorkelling and Scuba Explorer certifications are achieved.
